Cleaners W12 Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles, responsibilities and procedures adopted by Cleaners W12 to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors and members of the public. Our cleaning services are delivered in homes, offices and commercial premises, and we are committed to maintaining safe working conditions in every environment where we operate.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
Cleaners W12 is committed to preventing accidents, injuries and work-related ill health arising from our cleaning activities. We aim to provide and maintain safe equipment, safe systems of work and a safe working environment. We also recognise our responsibility to ensure that our services do not put our clients or others at risk.
We comply with relevant health and safety legislation and continually review our practices to improve safety performance. All members of staff are expected to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions at work.
Responsibilities and Management
Senior management is responsible for establishing and reviewing this Health and Safety Policy and for ensuring that suitable resources are allocated to implement it effectively. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for communicating safety procedures, monitoring compliance and reporting any issues that may affect safe working.
All employees have a duty to follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards and cooperate in any investigation or improvement measures. Clients also play an important role by informing us of any on-site risks, restrictions or building rules that may affect the safe delivery of cleaning services.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Cleaners W12 carries out risk assessments for typical cleaning tasks and for specific sites where this is appropriate. These risk assessments identify potential hazards, evaluate risks and set out control measures that must be followed by staff. Common areas considered include slips and trips, manual handling, use of cleaning chemicals, work at height, and electrical safety.
Safe systems of work are developed from these assessments and form part of our staff training. Employees are required to follow these procedures at all times and to stop work immediately if they believe an activity cannot be carried out safely.
Use of Cleaning Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
We use appropriate cleaning products suitable for domestic and commercial environments. All chemicals are stored, handled and used in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Where products are identified as hazardous, suitable control measures are implemented, including correct dilution, safe storage, appropriate ventilation and the use of personal protective equipment where required.
Staff are trained to read and understand product labels and safety data information and are instructed never to mix chemicals or use products for purposes other than those specified. Empty containers and waste materials are disposed of responsibly and in line with environmental considerations.
Equipment Safety and Maintenance
Cleaners W12 provides suitable equipment for the tasks undertaken, such as vacuum cleaners, mops, buckets and specialist cleaning tools. All electrical equipment is checked regularly for visible damage and must not be used if faults are suspected. Defective equipment is taken out of service until it has been repaired or replaced.
Employees must use equipment only for its intended purpose and in accordance with any training or instructions given. Cables, hoses and tools must be positioned so as not to create trip hazards or obstruct emergency exits.
Manual Handling and Physical Safety
Many cleaning tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling items such as vacuum cleaners, waste bags or furniture. To reduce the risk of injury, staff receive guidance on safe manual handling techniques, including correct posture, lifting methods and load limits. Wherever possible, heavy or awkward loads are reduced, shared between colleagues or moved using appropriate aids.
Employees are expected to assess each task before starting work, avoid unnecessary lifting, and request assistance if an item is too heavy or difficult to move safely.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks or eye protection, is provided where risk assessments identify a need for additional protection. Employees must use this equipment correctly and look after it properly. Any loss, damage or defect must be reported so that replacement items can be provided without delay.
Protective clothing should be worn whenever required by the task or environment, and must not be modified in any way that reduces its effectiveness.
Training, Information and Supervision
All cleaners receive initial and ongoing training relevant to their duties. This includes instruction on safe working practices, correct use of equipment and cleaning agents, emergency procedures and incident reporting. Additional training is provided when new methods, products or equipment are introduced.
Supervision appropriate to the level of experience of each employee is maintained, and senior staff are available to provide guidance or clarification on any health and safety matter.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, incidents and near misses involving our staff or arising from our activities must be reported as soon as possible to management. We investigate these events to identify causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence. Records are kept to assist in monitoring trends and improving our safety performance.
Where required, incidents will be reported to relevant authorities in accordance with applicable regulations.
Emergency Procedures
Cleaners W12 staff are informed of emergency procedures relevant to the sites they attend, including fire evacuation routes, assembly points and any site-specific instructions. Employees must keep exits and access routes clear at all times and must follow client procedures in the event of fire, medical emergencies or other incidents.
Where our activities could influence emergency arrangements, such as blocking exits or using flammable materials, additional precautions will be taken and agreed on with the client.
Health, Welfare and Wellbeing
We recognise that health and safety includes both physical and mental wellbeing. Workloads are managed to avoid unnecessary stress, and breaks are encouraged as appropriate for the length and intensity of tasks. Employees are encouraged to raise any health concerns that may affect their ability to work safely so that reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever significant changes occur in our operations, legal requirements or working practices. Feedback from staff and clients is welcomed and forms part of our commitment to continuous improvement.
By working together, Cleaners W12, our employees and our clients can ensure that all cleaning services are delivered in a safe, responsible and professional manner.
